Have you ever asked yourself whether or not you are actually free? To be honest, I have never asked myself this question until today. However, after thinking about it, knowing whether we are free or not is actually very interesting and hard to answer. Some believe that we are actually free while others believe that we aren’t.
Some may say that we are not free because there are laws in the world that control and limit us. However, I beg to differ. Laws are actually just consequences from the unlawful actions we make. These do not actually control our minds and actions; rather, we are the ones who give them consent to affect our actions. Others tend to misunderstand this and end up believing that laws are the ones that hinder us from doing actions we may want to do like killing, rapping, or robbing. They believe that laws are the ones keeping us unfree because if we do those unlawful actions, we would go to prison. The consequences somehow hold or hinder most of them to do those harmful actions since no one wants to be imprisoned. However, if you think about it, we are actually the ones keeping ourselves unfree. Sadly, our minds were programmed from birth to fear and care about how society sees us. As soon as we are born, we tend to care about everything in life. A person does not just kill anyone because they care about their lives and how others will see them. Since they care about these, most people do not violate those laws to not ruin their lives and let others see them as criminals. Caring for everything in life made them limited. On the other hand, if we do not care about how other people see us and just live without care in the world, we wouldn’t be afraid of going to prison. Because of this, we would get to do anything we actually want in life. If we live without care in the world, that is the time where we could all be truly free. However, even if we could choose not to care, we still do. We are the ones holding the key to freedom, but most of us do not use the key. However, maybe there’s a reason why most of us don't use it.
On the other hand, this could also be implemented when talking about most of the things people tend to claim that keeps us unfree like society and time. Some may say that we are not truly free because of time. Due to the fact that time is limited, it makes us rush to do things and limits us which makes us unfree. However, we actually have a choice to not care about how time is limited. With this, we wouldn't have to rush and get suffocated. We would most likely just get to relax and not get urged to do things. However, even though we could just choose the other choice, we still choose to care. Sometimes we just can’t help it. On the other hand, some may also say that humans aren’t free due to the existence of the society we have today. The society today creates a world where everyone tells you what to do and expects you to do it. However, we all have the choice to not listen and care about whatever anyone says. And because of this, we would get to live as free as a bird without trying to do what everyone is telling you to.
In life, we are actually free, but we are the ones who make ourselves unfree. We always have a choice to not care about anything which would keep us off the edge. We just can't help but care. On the other hand, sometimes things that limit or keeps us unfree are not primarily evil, for they may be the one who would make us a better person or even make us happy in the end. These are the things which also creates order in our world. Imagine a world where no one actually cares. There would be random killings and no developments in the world. This is why sometimes it may actually be better to care about everything in life. Sometimes those controls or limitations do not really affect our lives greatly to the point where we must live without caring about anything. Even with some limits set in our lives, we can still actually enjoy life as it is. In fact, when humans get to experience total freedom, they may not even like it .
